  1. Inspiration for our 2022 Flower Show, ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’:
  • The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum, 1900. Facsimile editions of the original are available.  An instant hit and considered the first American fairy tale, there are significant differences with the 1939 film.  Dorothy’s shoes were silver, not red, for example, and the flying monkeys become her friends after she frees them by killing the Wicked Witch of the West.
  • ‘The Wizard of Oz’, 1939 film starring Judy Garland and one of the first films to use Technicolor. The film was only moderately successful when first released in theaters, but its release on television in 1956 catapulted it to fame. According to the US Library of Congress, it is the most seen film of all time.
